Frequently Asked Questions
What is Deadman Productions?
Deadman Productions, Inc. is a non-profit group put together to provide a long-running LARP game using the White Wolf Storyteller system.
What is a LARP?
Live Action Role-Play. There have been a lot of weird descriptors out there, but to us it's mostly a mixture of interactive storytelling and freeform acting. For the most part, everyone creates a character much like an actor would take a role in a play. There are stats and rules to govern what this character can and cannot do in the scope of the game. And with the help of Narrators and Storytellers, everyone goes about and plays the game, creating a massive story as they go. It's an extension of tabletop roleplaying games like Vampire, GURPS, and Dungeons and Dragons, except that LARPs tend to have upwards of twenty or thirty players at one time.
Vampires? You have to be kidding me?
Believe it or not, it's a lot of fun. You create a character using the Minds Eye Theatre rules created by White Wolf. The character is a Vampire, belonging to one of the thirteen Clans, and then we insert them into the story. Instead of having mortal concerns like walking around in the daylight, eating, and breathing, you now portray a creature of the night, feeding on the blood of mortals for sustenance. And it goes much deeper than that. You now must deal with your nature as a predator, and the eternal struggle against your own darker impulses. This ain't swords and sorcery kids.
How often do you meet, and where is it held?
We meet on the campus of North Carolina State University, at Thompkins Hall usually on the ground floor. Click Here for a map of the Campus. We are in building #22. We go by a schedule that the University graciously gives us, but we try to have our games on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month. Game time usually starts around seven-thirty p.m. The Storytellers try to get there around six-thirty, and games may start as late as eight p.m., but we're trying to get started earlier.
How much does it cost to play?
Zero. Yes, you heard it right. We realize that a majority of our players are college students, or intelligent enough to find something other to do than pay to play in a Live Action game. Not to mention the fact that charging someone to play in our game just feels wrong. Plus, not charging people to play means we are not obligated to let a person continue to play. In other words, if rules are continually broken, we will ask players to leave the game on a permanent basis.
So what system is used?
We primarily use three books as rules for the game. The only one we recommend all players either purchase or at least have access to is Mind's Eye Theatre: Laws of the Night, revised edition, published by White Wolf. The other two we reference are the Laws of the Night: Camarilla Guide and the Laws of the Night: Sabbat Guide. Most of the characters played in the game, will require only the main rulebook. The others, along with the wealth of other material White Wolf publishes, are mostly entertaining reads and resource material.
What other kind of rules are there?
We do have some by-laws, that are extensions of the basic LARP rules in Laws of the Night, and certain rules enforced by us and the University. As always, follow the rule of Common Sense. If you have questions beyond that, please ask us.
How long has this been going on?
Hmm, Deadman Productions originally saw its origins back in April or May of 1999. It was originally developed to be a six-to-eight session chronicle, and it somehow spiralled horribly out of control. The original creators passed the torch down to the current crew in charge, with the original chronicle lasting just shy of two years. 2001 saw the chronicle, 'Dust to Dust' and a slight changing of the guard of STs. Now the number of Storytellers has risen to six, and they are are engineering a new Chronicle to outdo all of the others. Let the Tempest begin.
