Hearsay:
Even within the wicked realms of the Abyss lie a few places of sanctity. On an unnamed layer rests a pool of souls that can provide guidance to cutters who have ventured into the depths. The trip is an arduous one, but the knowledge there is well worth the risks involved. The only reason that the place exists is the nature of chaos to show that not everything on the plane is purely evil.
Description:
Any basher who's heard the tales of the Garden on Baator is familiar with the concept of small locations of good in the midst of a plane of evil. This lone point of assistance is a small pool that rests atop a hill in a land of graves under a dark grey sky. The surrounding area is plagued by roving bands of lesser undead, mostly zombies and skeletons, that scavenge the land for prey. Most forms of magic that obscure a cutter from the sight of the dead do not work here, save for the protection of the Dustmen's Dead Truce. If a group can make it to the top of the low hill, they will find what one humorous explorer labelled as Grave Wisdom.
The pool itself is about twenty feet in diameter and a depth which has yet to be tested. It is filled with a murky, black liquid the consistency of water that surprisingly has no deadly properties (other than being non-drinkable). Any cutter who kneels in front of the pool and drops a lock of hair in will see faces form and dissolve in the liquid. These visions are spirits trapped within the pool after they perished on the plane. These spirits may be asked questions about any place or thing in the Abyss, and they will respond to the best of their ability. They only provide one answer per lock of hair, making exceptions for things they do not know about.
Special Features:
Of course, the Abyss is known for malevolence and corruption, and the site known as Grave Wisdom is no different. The sinister truth of the place is that the nature of the plane does not affect the testimonies or opinions of the pool spirits whatsoever. The reason is that Grave Wisdom is a magnet for misguided souls who have fallen in the Abyss. The spirits drawn to this place are berks who make the absolutely poorest choices, usually which resulted in their own demise. They have come from all reaches of the Abyss' infinite layers, carrying with them a grand variety of experiences and knowledge, yet this knowledge is tainted by a pervading lack of wisdom. As this information is truth as far as the spirits know, no form of detection will determine a false nature, even those surpassing the plane's natural resistance.
The knowledge gained from Grave Wisdom is fairly factual, as long as the spirits involved have witnessed it. They will tend to believe well-crafted lies from others, but they always try to steer a berk in what they would consider the right direction. The general tendencies of the spirits is to go against tanar'ri, so they are particular about their sources of information. They have good knowledge of portals and layers, and sometimes rulers and Abyssal Lords. As long as a cutter is smart enough to ask them for straight facts, and nothing which involves or leaves room for opinion, they will get the truth (if it is known to the Pool).
